Don Pitts
Founder and President
With more than three decades of experience in the music and entertainment industry, Don Pitts founded Sound Music Cities to help emerging and established communities find practical solutions to sound-related challenges and strengthen their local music economies. His work focuses on turning lived experience, data, and policy into tools cities can actually use.
Don was most recently named one of the 26 Most Influential People in Music for 2026 by SPIN magazine, recognizing his national impact on music policy, sound management, and music ecosystem development. His approach is grounded in time spent working directly with musicians, venue operators, residents, and city staff, and translating those conversations into clear, actionable outcomes.
Prior to launching Sound Music Cities, Don led the Music and Entertainment Division within the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department. During his tenure, he earned the nickname “The Sound Whisperer” after helping reduce music-related sound complaints by more than 75 percent. His leadership helped shift the city’s approach from enforcement to sound management, creating better outcomes for venues, neighborhoods, and city staff, while supporting a more sustainable environment for live music.
Originally from Nashville, Don’s career spans nearly every corner of the music ecosystem. His experience includes managing artists and venues, working with promoters and festivals, leading entertainment relations at Gibson Guitar, and serving in public-sector leadership roles. This combination of industry and government experience allows him to navigate both creative and civic systems with ease.
Don is best known for leading music census projects and ecosystem assessments in more than 30 communities across the U.S. He works alongside clients as a partner, listening for patterns unique to each place and helping communities address the foundational issues that shape whether a music ecosystem thrives or struggles. His work is guided by a simple belief: strong music scenes are built through steady, practical work and long-term commitment.
When he is not advising communities, Don can usually be found walking Austin trails with his family and black lab, Konjo, or adding to his collection of vintage western shirts.
